modern Kitchens in all accommodation Should you prefer to cook your own meals, all of our accommodation has well equipped kitchens that provide everything you need to cook most dishes. There is also a gas fired WeberQ BBQ on the deck if you fancy a BBQ overlooking our beautiful Pink Bay. This means you have the flexibility of self-catering, or if you prefer, ordering our delicious evening meal hampers if you want to spoil yourselves.

All of our accommodation comes standard with a comprehensive continental breakfast. However we can supply a cook yourself hamper of bacon, eggs, mushrooms & tomatoes as an option. There is nothing nicer than sitting out on the deck enjoying freshly cooked bacon and eggs whilst watching Kangaroos grazing nearby and the waves gently lapping on the beach in the background.

Close Encounter on the Secret Seals TourIf you love wildlife and want to do something really special that virtually no other tourists on Kangaroo Island get the privilege of trying, then this is the tour for you. This a very special Kangaroo Island wildlife experience where we travel by luxury 4WD to a remote seal colony on the spectacular south coast of Kangaroo Island. It is about 30 minutes drive from the Lodge. No other tourists visit here as it is on private property. The seal colony is located on an ancient 550 million year old coastline and the scenery is simply spectacular. You will need to be fit enough to walk up and down a steepish track to get to the Seal Colony - it is not difficult, just steep. There are very few places left in the world where you have the privilege of enjoying wildlife in the wild and where you get to observe them going about their daily routine without anyone around to spoil the experience.

After visiting the seal colony, we go to “The Bar with a View” where we enjoy a glass of Kangaroo Island bubbly overlooking stunning views, near the seal colony, and then a short beach comb along the spectacular ancient coastline.

Another great days fishing on Kangaroo Island Kangaroo Island is a renowned fishing destination and there is no better fish to catch and eat than our delicious King George Whiting. Sea Dragon Lodge can arrange private fishing charters, dolphin & seal spotting and/or sightseeing. Kangaroo Island has fabulous coastline which many consider to be even more spectacular when viewed from the water. Pink Bay, is our beautiful pristine beach, and only 3 to 4 minutes’ walk from the Accommodation. We have a small Gazebo with sun lounges to relax on and picnic ware if you want to have a picnic lunch on the beach. You can fish, swim or snorkel from the beach. If you don’t fancy the short walk up and down the hill, we will gladly take you in the car. A lovely time to visit the beach is around sunset when Kangaroos are often spotted on or near the beach. Enjoying a bottle of wine on the beach while watching the sun go down is difficult to beat.

If you are not a strong swimmer you will find the beach very safe as there are generally no strong rips and the beach has a very gradual slope, allowing you to easily wade out into the water. The water temperature varies from about 15o to 16o in winter to about 19o to 20o in Summer. Dolphins and seals regularly visit the beach and can often be seen frolicking in the shallows or feeding on the schools of ocean mullet that frequent this coastline. We are generally luck enough to see a whale or two each winter, with nearby Cape Willoughby usually seeing about 50 every season.

Sea Dragon Lodge is the only Kangaroo Island accommodation with a secluded beach with private access.

Kangaroos near Sea -Dragon Lodge Sea Dragon Lodge is 30 minutes’ drive from the nearest town, so most of our guests dine-in. There are supermarkets at both Penneshaw

(30 minutes away) and Kingscote (1hour away).

As our 250 acre property is a heritage listed Sanctuary, wildlife abounds around the Lodge. You will see many different kinds of animals on the property often very close to the accommodation. These include wallabies, kangaroos, possums, echidnas, & goannas. We also have many different kinds of native birds and many avid birdwatchers stay at the Lodge just for the birdlife. We supply a bird guide of Kangaroo Island and small pair of binoculars in each accommodation. There is wildlife near the accommodation all year round. Marine life is also plentiful at our little beach with dolphins and seals being regular visitors. In winter whales can regularly be seen from Cape Willoughby Lighthouse and sometimes from the Lodge.

Pennington Bay
  • Antechamber Bay a 3km pristine white sandy beach is a lovely place for a walk as it rarely has other people on it. Its 10 min drive from the Lodge. The Chapman River flows into Antechamber Bay and has fantastic Bird Life.
  • Pennington Bay is a spectacular Ocean beach. (see Photo opposite) It’s a 25 minute drive from the Lodge and is my favourite beach. It is probably one of the most photographed beaches on the island because of the spectacular vistas it offers.
  • Prospect Hill lookout (near Pennington Bay) commands a great view over the Southern Ocean to the south and to Pelican Lagoon in the north
  • American River Oyster farm (if you like fresh oysters) is 35 minute drive from the Lodge.
  • Enjoy fresh oysters literally straight out of the ocean.
  • Dudley Wines Cellars, arguably one of the best cellar doors in Australia from a scenery perspective, is a spectacular place for lunch and only 10 minutes up the road from the Lodge
  • Cape Willoughby Lighthouse, the oldest in SA, is a 25 minute walk from the Lodge and if you do the lighthouse tour offers amazing 360o views from the top. On the way back you can walk around the cliff tops back to beautiful Windmill Bay, all time taking in breathtaking views of our dramatic south coast.
  • “Devil’s Kitchen” is near the Lighthouse and has spectacular scenery
  • We also have several beautiful nature walks on our property. It is not uncommon to see up to 50 Kangaroos and Wallabies as well as a range of other animals and numerous birds
