Kangaroo Island is becoming a serious food and wine destination for the gourmet traveller in Australia. Located less than 100kms from Adelaide, it offers a wide range of delicious farm fresh produce, that is grown in the most pristine of conditions. At the top of the list, is the tantalising array of ocean fresh seafood which includes southern rock lobster, prawns, abalone, oysters, calamari, mussels, crabs and of course, a wide array of fish. Delicious fresh seafood is available from a number of outlets on Kangaroo Island as described below
KI Fresh Seafood
As well as having the best Fish & Chip outlet on the island, KI Fresh Seafood located on the outskirts of Kingscote, has a wide range of fresh seafood. They source their seafood straight from the local fishermen and process it on site. You can’t get seafood any fresher unless you catch yourselves!.They sell most types of fishall year round, except for southern rock lobster which is seasonal. They are located next to the Caltex petrol station and are open 7 days week during normal shopping hours, which makes it very convenient to purchase your seafood meal.
Fergusons Seafood is also located on the outskirts of Kingscote and is a fish processing business with a small shopfront. They also sell a wide range of quality fresh fish straight from the fisherman. Their opening hours are quite limited, so it is not always possible to buy fish there.
American River Oyster Farm Shop
The American River Oyster Farm Shop is located on the esplanade at American River. They grow their own oysters in the pristine waters of Eastern Cove and sell them straight out of the ocean. If you are an oyster lover, they don’t get any better than these. You can eat at the shop, or take them with you to have later for dinner. The shop also sells a range of fish, marron and baby abalone. Opening hours are limited, so it pays to ring first to make sure they are open, before venturing out to the shop.
Andermel Marron Farm
The Andermel Marron Farm, located in the centre of the island towards Vivonne Bay, sells Marron fresh from their farm. Their seafood platter is very popular and a great way to try the marron along with a number of other seafood delicacies. Marron are a fresh water lobster that is native to Australia. They were introduced to the island from Western Australia and have thrived in the island’s pristine water ways.
King George Whiting – Served a little differently
Looking to try something a little different? Then visit Vivonne Bay General Store and try their famous King George Whiting Burger. The burgers are cooked fresh and are very popular. Vivonne Bay, voted Australia’s best beach, is a convenient stopping point on your way to Flinders Chase National Park.
Alternatively, Dudley Wine Cellars located halfway between Penneshaw and Seadragon Lodge at Cape Willoughby, serves a delicious King George Whiting Pizza. Dudley Wine Cellars are set on top of cliffs overlooking backstairs passage and provides a stunning setting to enjoy your gourmet pizza while sampling their great range of wines.
Sea Food at Sea Dragon Lodge
Sea Dragon Lodge is a luxury Kangaroo Island Retreat located just 30 minutes from Penneshaw where the Kangaroo Island ferry arrives.
