About The Island
Kangaroo Island was first discovered by Matthew Flinders and the men aboard HMS Investigator. Just weeks prior, they’d lost seven men in a boating accident near Port Lincoln.
Even then, Kangaroo Island’s green woodlands and bountiful supply of fresh meat and water did much to restore the expedition’s spirit.
The island would later become Australia’s first free colony. Today, it has a strong local community of farmers, citizens and creative spirits, with the population numbering over 5,000 in total.
As in most of oceania, wheat and sheep are the main agricultural pursuits - but cattle grazing has grown in popularity, along with wine, cheese, honey, grape and free-range egg operations.
Of course, the island also is plentiful in seafood, with the local fishing fleet and aquaculture farms producing oysters, abalone, freshwater marron and more.
552 National Geographic Traveller experts voted Kangaroo Island as the #1 island in Asia Pacific for sustainable tourism and environmental protection.
On top of that, a University of Sydney selection panel chose the Island’s Vivonne Bay as Australia’s best beach.
So whether you’re looking to experience Australia’s amazing wildlife, culinary tourism, a secluded beach getaway, or a luxurious authentic Australian experience, Kangaroo Island’s got something for you.
